Twitter- Serving Together

A key aspect of Servolution is that it is ongoing. It is much more than an idea or event- but a growing revolution that is spreading across the world. Serving is constant- happening everyday in over 300 churches around the world. Being a part of Twitter helps us all to stay connected to each of the Servolution projects happening everyday, all over the globe- from Baton Rouge, to Oklahoma, To New Zealand and Swaziland, Africa.

All it takes is signing up for Twitter & writing a 140-word statement about your outreach including #Servolution at the end. Then each and every person searching through Servolution can be encouraged and inspired by the stories of your own church’s serving and the way that you are changing lives.

Starting your National Day of Service Plans

September 11th has been proclaimed, by President Obama, a “National Day of Service”. This is a day to honor those who gave their lives to defend our country and to show our gratitude by giving back to the community. Below are a few tips that you may find helpful in starting National Day of Service projects in your community. We have also made available a downloadable mock up of a government project proposal, download it here.

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE: FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU GET STARTED

1) Partnership –There are two main areas in which you can search out partnerships. One is your local government and another is your local community. Due to the fact that the National Day of Service is a government project from the President it should not be hard for you to partner with the mayor or government of your state. You can also partner with organizations in your community such as the United Way or Habitat for Humanity,

2) Take the Lead – So many times churches will hesitate to take a lead in their community. Christ has called us to serve people. So don’t be afraid to take the lead in serving those in your area. Let’s help show the government and community how people should be treated.

3) Pray – There’s value in praying over our communities. In our plans to serve our cities, we are submitting our natural abilities to God’s supernatural power. We must come before Him and pray about what we need to do. God will open up doors that we could never imagine in our governments, communities, partnerships, and in peoples’ lives.

4) Be creative – God has given us the ability to be creative. Often times we stick with what we know works, but with such an amazing opportunity staring us in the face to be able to partner with our governments, let’s let our creativity flow. So many times here at Healing Place Church we find that the more creative we are the more fun and impacting the blessing really is.

5) Culture of serving – Through being creative, taking the lead, praying, and partnering with our local governments and community programs, many people will be inspired to continue to serve. Be sure to let them know of any future opportunities you have or any idea of a Servolution in your community. Do not let this be a one-day event but a catapult to starting a revolution of serving through your community.

Birmingham Dream Center

Dream centers may be one of the most effective ways to reach a community. They are outreach centers that create a permanent presence in a specific, typically unreached, area that requires a focused attention at unmet physical and spiritual needs. We have learned the Dream Center model from the incredible Ministries started by Joyce Meyers in St. Louis and Matthew Barnett in Los Angeles. We have sent teams there to serve and learn and have created two Dream Centers here in Louisiana. We have one in an overlooked area of Baton Rouge and another in the nearby city of Donaldsonville, a city within one of the poorest zip codes of our nation. These centers allow us to daily reach out to the same people with through outreaches like an after school program for youth, a free clothing boutique, bible studies, church services, food giveaways and much more.

We have also watched another great church begin a Dream Center in another city and have begun to spark a change through an everyday Servolution. Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, Alabama led by Pastor Chris Hodges has been working in a low-income area of their city for sometime. They were given the opportunity to purchase a retired firehouse, and had the grand opening of the Birmingham Dream Center in July. Their newly renovated Dream Center is absolutely gorgeous with the capacity to reach so many people with God’s love!

The Center will house all of their outreach offices and be like the hub for their Servolution. They have recently started a tutoring program as well as small groups from the center. They also open the Dream Center to local police as a place to stop by, grab a snack, and sit in a small café area to take a break- just another way to show gratitude for their continual serving to the community and to show the officers the church cares for them- what an incredible idea!

One man from Church of the Highlands put it like this, “the building lets the community know that we are here. And that we are here to stay, we aren’t going anywhere.” Such an encouraging message to proclaim and spread in environments where help- both physical and spiritual- tends to be temporarily offered.

The second part of the Dream Center is actually right next-door, and is a 16,600 ft. medical center. Christ Health Center is an incredible outreach that is being created into a state-of-the-art primary care, dental, counseling, and pharmacy operation. After being given a chance to tour the facility it is inspiring to see the work that is being done there and the dreams the team has for the future. They hope to soon be able to treat 30,000 patients a year! That is absolutely incredible.

The facility is located in an area that is lacking in substantial medical care and that is why the church came to meet the need. The medical clinic has a full-time staff, but much of the work is done by volunteers- both from Church of the Highlands and people from other churches in the community just willing to offer their time to serve the way Jesus called them to. They are currently building the dental clinic, and it offers you a vision for the future to glance into the construction area and hear those involved tell you their hopes for lives changed through a physical need being met, and by that the love of God being acted out as they get to be Jesus’ hands and feet!

Thank you, Pastor Chris Hodges & Church of the Highlands for serving with compassion and without restraint, offering inspiration on how to reach the world by serving!
