Partnering Church: Church of the Highlands

Check out what my friend Chris Hodges, Lead Pastor of Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, Alabama wrote about 7 Days of Servolution:

“The 7 Days of Servolution campaign is giving our church a practical way to make a difference in our city. In both the large church service and the small group environment, we’ll be able to focus our whole congregation on the Biblical mandate to love one another.”

That’s what this really is all about – living out God’s plan for us to love one another. It is what Jesus did as he walked the earth two thousand years ago, and it is what he has built his Church to do.

We are no more Christlike than when we are loving and serving one another.

What is a Servolution?

What is Servolution? Why am I compelled to give my life to it? I love its two simple components. First, it is a revolution. Webster defines a revolution as a complete change, an overthrowing of an authority or social system. Paul said (Col. 2:15), “having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.“ I want to be a part of the movement Jesus began 2000 years ago when He gave His life on a cross and began the destruction of this sinful, painful world in order to usher in a new one in which “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Rev. 21:4)

It is a revolution of serving. A revolution is a counter-cultural movement that creates a new culture. Serving is not just counter-cultural; it goes against our nature and logic. We all want to get ahead through power. Jesus said that serving is the greatest way to gain influence. No agenda, no strings, no fine print. Just extravagant, sacrificial love through acts of kindness. The world will be changed. The Servolution has begun!

Servolution in Motion

What an amazing opportunity to reach the community of Baton Rouge this past weekend. About 400 high school and middle school students came together to create and run multiple outreaches in the community. Each team of about 30 students was given a gift card with fifty dollars on it and the freedom to create there own outreaches. We did not give them many instructions other than to be as creative as possible. Sometimes it is just that simple. The outreaches ranged from serving the widows of our community to bringing fresh baked king cakes to all of the fire departments. One group of students even brought dog treats and cold water to families enjoying an amazing day out at a local park. The involvement of your youth in Servolution could be one of the most important parts; they sometimes can be the most creative and inspirational force behind all that will take place.

A Fresh New Idea

It is amazing to think of all the creative ways people come up with to reach their community. Here is just one idea that you can take into action in yours!

Dog Park Outreach
Find a local dog park and give out free doggie treats. Not only will you attract every dog, but their owners as well. This will open a door for you to share your faith and show them the love of Christ in a tangible way.
When they ask you why the free treat, it’s simple… because God loves right where you are, with no strings (or leashes) attached!

Try it out and come back to comment with stories of all God did!

A Changed Life

I was very excited this particular week to be at a Ladies Thrive outreach because I could see some obvious changes in some of the women’s countenances. I took the time to meet one of the ladies that I had seen several times but had not visited with.

I asked why she used a walking stick and she said it was because she had a stroke earlier in the year. I asked her if she knew what had caused a stroke at her age-she was only 51 years old. She said it was caused by the crack she had been smoking, but said she no longer touched the stuff. I asked if that was because the stroke was a wake up call. She said “no, no I didn’t quit until I started coming to Ladies Thrive several weeks ago, it has made such a difference in my life….and you know it is so nice to have food in my icebox again”.

We plant and we water never knowing when we will see fruit…I have been blessed to see some of the fruit of our labor. All praise to Him!!
